Charlie Wilson’s Tiny Desk: the real performance
NPR Music posted “Charlie Wilson: Tiny Desk Concert” on June 5, 2023, one of a month of new Tiny Desk concerts NPR Music ran for Black Music Month. The video runs 29 minutes 38 seconds on NPR Music’s YouTube channel and had nearly 7 million views on October 28, 2026.
The set list, in order:
- “Charlie, Last Name Wilson”
- “Computer Love”
- “There Goes My Baby”
- “I’m Blessed”
- “Yearning For Your Love”
- “Sweet Yamz”
- “Outstanding”
Behind Wilson were 12 musicians and singers: five more vocalists, three keyboard players, drums, guitar, bass and saxophone. Rolling Stone wrote that he “closed the show with ‘Outstanding’ from 1982’s The Gap Band IV.”
The AI clip vs the 2023 performance, shot by shot
The first AI clip, posted on TikTok on October 18, 2026, is 19 seconds long and has five shots. Each one lines up with a stretch of NPR’s video:
| Shot | AI clip (seconds) | NPR video | What’s on screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0–1.4 | 23:46–23:47 | Lead singer seen from the side, arm up |
| 2 | 1.4–6.7 | 23:47–23:53 | The whole band from the front: red keyboard nearest the camera, backing singers in a row behind it, sax player at the left |
| 3 | 6.7–13.0 | 23:53–23:59 | Tight shot of the lead singer, grinning wide |
| 4 | 13.0–16.4 | 23:59–24:02 | Sax player mid-solo, a keyboard player in the background |
| 5 | 16.4–19.1 | 24:02–24:05 | Same full-band angle as shot 2 |
Shots 2, 3 and 4 run the same length in both videos, to within a tenth of a second. The desk, the packed shelves, the red keyboard and the saxophone stay. What changes is who is in the band, and the frame: the AI clip is vertical (9:16, the shape of a phone screen), while NPR’s video is widescreen (16:9).
Is the Outstanding Tiny Desk real, or AI?
It depends on the clip. Charlie Wilson’s performance is real and is still on NPR’s site and YouTube channel. The clips with coaches, friends or anyone else in the band are AI remakes.
NPR didn’t make them. The first one came from TikTok user @theburnerfromhe11, whose caption says “This is an AI parody!” and names “Tiny Desk: Charlie Wilson” as the original video. Two quick checks:
- Length and shape. NPR’s video is a 29-minute widescreen concert. A 15- to 19-second vertical clip of “Outstanding” with other people singing is a remake.
- The band. NPR names everyone who played. If the faces at the desk aren’t Wilson and his band, it’s AI.
People do go looking for the real one: an X post sharing the original performance “for reference,” posted late on October 23 (ET) after the AI clip went viral, has passed 500,000 views.
Was “Outstanding” a meme before Tiny Desk AI?
Yes, in sports. As the clip’s creator told The Athletic, “Outstanding” had become an anthem for meme videos about “past-their-prime” athletes, players seen as past their best. The first AI Tiny Desk clip came on top of that: an “All-Loss” concert of college football coaches whose teams had just lost. The rest of the timeline is on our Outstanding Tiny Desk meme page.
Can I put my face into Charlie Wilson’s Tiny Desk?
Yes, with a photo of yourself. Use the generator at the top of this page: upload your photo for the lead singer and, if you like, a friend’s photo for the tambourine singer. You get a new 15-second vertical video of the scene with you at the desk, with AI-generated sound.
A Standard 720p video starts at $9.99 and HD 1080p at $24.99; one or two photos cost the same. Use only your own photo, or photos of people who have clearly agreed.

Put yourself in the Tiny DeskDoes the AI version use the original “Outstanding” recording?
The first AI clip’s caption names the song: “Outstanding by the Gap Band.” Videos made on this site come with AI-generated sound, plus a silent copy. If you want the original recording on your post, post the silent copy and add it from TikTok’s sound library (the music you can pick while posting), if it’s there: TikTok makes library sounds available to individual users for personal, non-commercial videos. Turn on TikTok’s AI-generated label too, which marks your post as made with AI; TikTok requires it for realistic AI content.
